Swedish Massage: The Choice for Those New to Massage

If you’ve never had a massage, you may be surprised at the various techniques and types of massage available. However, the Swedish massage is the most common choice for first-timers.

What is a Swedish Massage?

The Swedish massage usually lasts about an hour, but it can go for 90 minutes. While it’s usually thought of as slow and gentle with a light touch, it can be more vigorous if the need calls for it. The Swedish massage is the basis for deep tissue massage and other techniques.

The therapist will use long strokes, circular movements and kneading. The goal usually is to relax the muscles in the area being worked on and stimulate blood flow. It is a full body massage, but the therapist can focus more time on one area if you have pain or tightness.

You will undress and cover up with a sheet as the therapist works on one area at a time. They will generally use lotion or oil to provide for smooth strokes.

When to Ask for a Swedish Massage?

If you’ve never had a massage or just want to relax, this type of massage is often the ideal choice. It’s also a great way to get comfortable with the process and develop a relationship with the therapist before moving to other types of massage.

Talk to your therapist about your goals and reasons for getting a massage. They can help you determine if a Swedish massage will meet your needs or if you should try another technique. You will receive greater benefit from regular massage treatments rather than just having one on an occasional basis.
