Hot Stone Massage Therapy

As with any form of massage therapy, hot stone massages relieve soreness and release tension throughout the muscles.

Heat helps to improve blood flow, flushing the treatment area with fresh nutrients and encouraging rehabilitation or relief. The application of hot stones releases heat which penetrates deep into the body, making it easier for a therapist to manipulate that area and increasing the effects of the treatment.

The heat of the stone sinks into the muscle, ultimately breaking down scar tissue, reducing muscle spasms, and even increasing overall flexibility.

Methods and Techniques

A hot stone massage is a combination of various massage techniques and warm or hot stones.

Stones are smooth and typically made of basalt, a fine-grained volcanic stone with the unique ability to retain heat for sustained periods. A variety of shapes and sizes of stones is used to best suit the area worked.

In addition to placing the stones for a short period of time on different parts of the body, your massage therapist will also be using the stones to massage your muscle which helps to achieve greater depth of muscle release.

Hot Stone Massage Benefits

Besides the obvious benefits of releasing tension and promoting relaxation, here are several other benefits:

Pain Relief

A hot stone massage can aid in combating some of the painful symptoms of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. Symptoms like swollen, painful, and tender joints, and overall joint stiffness.

A study found in the 2015 issue of Complementary Therapies in Practice found that participants who received pressure massage reported a better range of motion and reduced pain in the treated areas. In this case, an excellent form of massage to choose would be a hot stone massage.

Stress Relief

According to the American Massage Therapy Association, “massage therapy can be effective for stress relief.”

Multiple studies have shown that any form of massage can reduce stress and anxiety. In turn, reduced stress and anxiety improves one’s cardiovascular health.

A combination of heat therapy and massage—a hot stone massage—has been shown to reduce the levels of cortisol circulating in the blood. Cortisol is the stress hormone.

Increased Mobility

A hot stone massage may help some move with greater ease. In general, massage therapy is known to relax the muscles, reduce pain, and increase circulation. Adding heat or thermotherapy further increases circulation by dilating the blood vessels. All of this leads to greater mobility.

Joint flexibility is also improved, adding to ease of movement.

Alleviate Muscle Spasms

Muscles that are tense or tight can spasm. Add inflammation into the mix, and you have a recipe for spasms that can be debilitating and last for hours. At the very least, they can be annoying and distracting.

The benefit of a hot stone massage is muscles that are loose and limber. And since this massage can also decrease inflammation, it’s an excellent treatment for anyone who is plagued by muscle spasms.

Better Sleep

Several things can cause people to lose sleep. Stress can cause sleeplessness. Pain can cause sleeplessness. For a variety of reasons, it’s not surprising that many people get far less than the recommended 7 or 8 hours of sleep each night.

A hot stone massage is the answer to many of the situations that rob people of sleep, such as pain and stress. Treat the cause of sleeplessness and be rewarded with better health and a better night’s sleep.
