How to Stay Well During Flu Season

You hear someone sneezing or coughing in the cubicle next to yours or on the subway ride home. You hesitate to go grocery shopping or run other errands because of the risk of running into others who are getting sick. It can seem almost impossible to avoid getting the flu during this time of year, but there are several things you can do to stay well.

  • Avoid touching your face and wash your hands often. If you touch something after someone else has touched it, you’re less likely to spread germs if you keep your hands clean.
  • Get enough rest. Your immune system can work harder to protect you from getting sick if it’s in top condition.
  • Eat healthily and exercise. Doing these two steps will give your immune system ammunition to fight flu and colds.
  • Limit physical contact. Don’t hug people or even shake hands if you can help it. You’ll reduce your risk a lot if you keep your distance until warm weather.
  • Sanitize your space. Whether at home or the office, you should use sanitation wipes to wipe down door handles and other surfaces that people touch.

Reduce stress to limit your likelihood of getting sick. When you’re under stress, your body isn’t at its prime and you’re more likely to succumb to any germs to which you’re exposed. When you can’t remove the stress factor from your life, try to find a way to get relief for a few minutes. You may need to take a walk or get a massage to help you relax.

Eat Healthily

While most people recognize the importance of eating healthy, they may not think about what it means for flu season. It’s a good idea to increase your vitamin C and eat foods which are known to boost your immune system.

For example, probiotics like those found in yogurt are helpful to maintaining your digestive system. You also need to drink plenty of water to flush out your system and to keep you hydrated.

While it’s not always possible to avoid being around people who are sick, you can reduce your chances of getting the flu by living a healthy lifestyle. It will also promote faster recovery if you do get sick.
