Eating Right to Recover from an injury

While food doesn’t magically cure most illnesses and injuries, it can help speed the healing process. Nutrition is important in all medical conditions, and it can help you get well faster. Here are some tips to help you recover from an injury with the right diet.

If you’ve suffered a fracture or broken bone, protein is an essential part of your diet. It can help rebuild bones just like it helps with muscle building. Your body needs protein to function at its best, so make sure to include it in every meal and as part of your snacks.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is known for its ability to fight colds and flu. It also helps fight infection from wounds and other conditions. The immune system can use vitamin C to make it stronger so it can help your body heal faster. You can find the vitamin in citrus fruits.

Calcium is necessary for healthy bones. It’s equally important when you have a broken bone or stress fracture. Not only does calcium make your bones stronger, but it can help them heal faster as well. You also need vitamin D to work with the calcium, which you can get from being outside in the sunshine or in foods which are fortified with it.

Vitamin K

If you have an open wound which bleeds, vitamin K is an important part of the healing process. It helps the blood clot so you suffer from less blood loss. It also assists in fighting inflammation. You can get the vitamin from leafy green vegetables like spinach.

You’ll also need iron to provide oxygen to the blood so the wound can heal faster. Protein produces new skin cells, and whole grains can help reduce inflammation in the tissue.

If you’re prone to muscle cramps or even just sore muscles after a workout which can leave you sidelined, you may need to add potassium to your diet. You can enjoy a banana or melons to provide the sodium, chloride and potassium needed to keep your muscles in top shape.

Don’t let an injury keep you down. Eat a healthy diet and follow the doctor’s orders to be back up and at your usual routine quickly.
