How Often Should You Get A Massage?
How frequently you should get a massage depends on a few different factors and can differ person to person. Massages have many benefits such as reducing stress, improving health, and making you feel great. However, the number of massages needed is a personal decision that can be based on your physical, emotional and financial needs. The recommended standard amount is a massage every one to two weeks to keep up with the full benefits of massage therapy.
“You need to consider how you felt before the session and how you felt after, and then look at how long you maintain that,” says Pieter Sommen, the chair of the Easter Department in the Swedish Institute School of Massage Therapy in New York.
However, if you have chronic pain, or an illness, you may need to come more frequently to prevent those issues. If you have recently had an accident where you were injured, twice a week is recommended to maintain healing and then after healing is complete, once a month to prevent any further injury.
Another factor in determining how often you get a massage is the amount of stress you endure on a daily and weekly basis. Sometimes events in our lives can cause more tension and require more frequent visits to the massage therapist. Your situation dictates the time between treatments that will work best for you and how you feel afterwards. This is something that you can decide personally, based on how you feel.
If you are still not sure how often is good for you, talk to your doctor for a recommendation on what is best for your health. The benefits to massage are endless and you can feel relaxed, rejuvenated and refreshed and by going more frequently and consistently you can extend those benefits for a happier and healthier lifestyle.
