What is a Foam Roller and Why You Should Use One

Foam rollers are quickly becoming a popular supplement to fitness routines and daily lives everywhere. Have you ever had a fitness-related injury or experienced delayed onset muscle soreness post-workout? If so, foam rolling may be beneficial to include in your exercise routine to prevent these events from happening. Foam rollers are widely available in various sizes, materials, and price ranges. The typical foam roller is 36 inches long and 6 inches wide. Other variations you may see include shorter ones or half rollers that are flat on one side. Additionally, there are different types of foam cell types. Less expensive foam rollers tend to have less foam cell density and get softer over time through prolonged use much quicker. There are also other types of rollers that are hollow with bumps and grooves carved into them for direct trigger point targeting. These hollow types of foam rollers are made with much denser foam and are designed not to break (up to a certain weight limit).

Why Should I have a Foam Roller?

Firstly and foremost, foam rolling is a cost effective self-massage technique. Massage has been proven to bring more circulation to your muscles and tissues. Without having to spend an arm and a leg, you can now provide this benefit to yourself whenever you want by using a foam roller. It is an excellent way to loosen your muscles not only after a workout but also before a workout so you can use your full range of motion effectively when you exercise.

Additionally, foam rollers help to reduce sore and tight muscles from overuse or even poor posture. They are a great supplement to stretching, and using proper warm ups and cool downs for any workout. If you sit at a desk all day and your hip flexors and low back feel tight, using a foam roller will also help to decrease any stiffness.
