Skin is one of the largest organs of the body, yet it seems to be the most ignored. Taking care of your skin not only provides you with healthy benefits, but good skin care can keep you looking younger for much longer. Keeping your skin beautiful doesn’t require you to shell out lots of money on expensive products. Rather, you simply need to be more mindful of protecting your skin and of what you put into your body.
Smoking tends to age the skin over time, as the nicotine causes narrowing of the blood vessels under the skin. This prevents oxygenated blood from getting to your skin, which can diminish its overall look. Collagen and elastin, which give your skin flexibility, are also damaged, which can lead to wrinkles appearing much more quickly and make you look older than you really are.
Getting a tan for the summer always seems like a wonderful idea, but too much exposure to UVB rays can break down your skin very quickly. Your skin becomes dehydrated, and the tissue fibers that keep it together can start to wear down. This can lead to droopiness in the neck and arms. Too much sun exposure can also increase your risk of developing melanomas and other forms of skin cancer.
Use of retinoids:
Look for products that contain retinoids, as they are helpful in unclogging pores, clearing up acne, and boosting collagen production of the skin. This leads to improved skin texture and will help keep it looking at its best. Be warned that you may have a reaction to retinoids, so try a pea-sized amount on your skin every third night to allow your skin to become adjusted to the active ingredient. Common side effects can include dryness, flaking and redness, so it’s best to give your skin time to get used to it.
Keep a simple skin care process:
Don’t buy every single product on the shelf or the ones you see in commercials. There is such a thing as having too many skincare products! Overuse of them can strip your skin of their essential oils and can make your skin even worse. The main products that you’ll need are a simple cleanser, a moisturizer (preferably with some kind of sun-blocking properties), and a retinoid.
Maintain a balanced life:
None of the above tips may work for you if you don’t take care of yourself from within. Eating a balanced diet, exercising, and getting enough sleep can vastly improve the quality of your skin, as long as you do so on a regular basis.
