Metabolism isn’t a short cut

One word that sometimes pops up in the ever-expanding ocean of “misunderstood health” is ‘metabolism’. We may feel that our ‘slow metabolism’ is the reason we are overweight. And it does seem that way sometimes when you see some people eating their size in donuts but remaining remarkably thin? It doesn’t really seem fair, does it?

The health industry, always looking to pitch its next miracle weight loss program or pill, has propagated the falsehood that slow metabolism leads to obesity, and that their magic drug will activate this invisible weight burner and get you squared away with no problem. While it is true that everyone has a metabolic rate which burns calories at rest, this doesn’t account for the intake of calories and by no means is it the core reason you gain or lose weight.

No short cuts

The best way to look at metabolism is as a factor which accounts for the distribution and use of foods you eat during the day. Not as a short cut to weight loss. That notion is where many err, not necessarily because they are lazy or don’t want to work on losing weight, but because the “health” industry is so committed to making a sale by setting up all these false notions of easy weight loss plans. Ultimately, they try to create the falsehood of a shortcut, and when it comes to better health, metabolism isn’t one.

It’s not to say metabolism, or increasing it, won’t produce results per se. A faster metabolism can burn extra calories… just not the amount of say, a whole pound. It is possible to take supplements while doing a proper exercise regimen, or drinking water to help your system flush away bad fats. Ingesting protein helps your body break down and build up lean muscle, leading to increased calorie burn and increased metabolism too. Getting lots of proper rest helps.

So yes, metabolism has a small part to play in calories burned, but by no means is it the easy way out of good health and weight loss. There are no short cuts in health; it’s really about setting up lifelong healthy habits.
