Is Intermittent Fasting a Good Idea?

You may have heard of intermittent fasting, which involves avoiding food for a certain period of time, usually 16 to 24 hours while continuing to drink water or low calorie drinks. It has become one of the most popular fat loss methods, and many swear by its effectiveness at reducing body fat while maintaining muscle.

Some people limit their fasting period to 16 hours at a time. For instance, a person may eat one meal at noon and a second meal at 8 p.m., and then wait 16 hours, or until noon the next day to eat their next meal.

There are many different types of intermittent fasting strategies that you will find if you do a bit of research. There is no strategy that stands out as being particularly better than another. The main thing to keep in mind is, as extreme as intermitting fasting may sound it is entirely safe, provided that the fasting period is not too long.

Most people keep their fasting period at around 24 hours. The health benefits are now just starting to be studied, but many people believe that intermittent fasting can lead to body fat reduction – a faster reduction than diet and exercise would result in on their own.

Most people who do fast intermittently also diet and do exercise, and eating the right foods is just as important as fasting. Also, it isn’t guaranteed to work for everyone. The important thing to consider is this – if you have a high body fat percentage and you have had difficulties reducing it no matter what you do, it is a good idea to try new and safe methods that may work for you. If you haven’t tried intermittent fasting it is worth a shot, especially if you have struggled with weight gain.

Try eating one meal at noon and a second at around 7 or 8 p.m., then waiting until the next day at noon to eat again. In between, you can drink water and avoid drinks with sugar or calories. Try this for a few weeks and keep track of your weight changes. If you start losing weight and get closer to a healthier body fat percentage, it may be something you should consider doing regularly.
