Four Don’ts Before Bedtime
Getting seven to eight hours of sleep each night may be one of the best things you can do for yourself. Not only will you wake up feeling refreshed, but a good night’s sleep can do wonders for your health. Contrary to popular belief, here are four things you should not do prior to getting your beauty rest:
- Don’t drink alcohol. Sure, a glass of wine may help you to relax and not have a care in the world. However, alcohol (of any kind) is not a sleep aid. Alcohol, especially in women, can actually disrupt your sleeping patterns. As a result, you may start out getting a good night’s rest, but you may find yourself a bit restless in the later portion of your sleep.
- Don’t work out late at night. Working out before bed can make it difficult to sleep. Exercise stimulates your body, which can make it challenging to fall asleep at night no matter how tired you might be. Try to get your workout in at least three to four hours prior to going to bed. If time doesn’t allow, or if you have trouble falling asleep, opt for a yoga session. Yoga is calming and can help you to relax.
- Don’t eat a large meal before bedtime. Do your best to not eat two hours prior to falling asleep. If you must eat, try to avoid carbohydrates. In order to sleep easily, your hunger hormones must be high. Carbohydrates can actually lower your ghrelin (hunger hormone) making getting some shut-eye much more difficult. It is also hard for your stomach to digest a big meal while you are lying down. You could even end up with heartburn.
- Don’t use your computer, phone, TV or other gadgets while in bed. Avoid working, sending e-mails, texting, and watching TV from your bed. The light produced from these devices can disrupt your sleeping pattern. Using these devices in bed can also cause anxiety, making it more difficult for you to sleep.
